DUSHANBE, October 4, Asia-Plus — The first official visit of Turkmen president to Tajikistan is an important landmark in the contemporary history of Tajikistan and will pave the way for further expansion of relations between our countries, President Emomali Rahmon remarked at a news conference in Dushanbe on October 4 following a ceremony of signing of six Tajik-Turkmen cooperation documents.

“We share common positions practically on all issues that were discussed today and are good foundation of close cooperation, and the agreement on friendship and cooperation lays legal foundation of further expansion of relations between our countries,” Tajik president said.

He also expressed hope that tomorrow’s summit of the CIS heads of state will give a new impulse to development of many-sided cooperation between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.  “We reached mutual understanding on the summit issue and we agreed to carry on dialogue,” the Tajik head of state said, pointing to the necessity of using all existing potentials  to put Tajik-Turkmen cooperation on qualitatively new level.

Tajikistan’s leader also expressed gratitude to his Turkmen counterpart and Uzbek president for their political will that had allowed Tajik and Turkmen power companies to reach an agreement on delivery of Turkmen electrical power to Tajikistan.  Under the agreement designed for five year, Turkmenistan will annually supply 1.2 billion kWh of electricity to Tajikistan in the autumn-winter period.

For his part, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov noted that Turkmenistan and Tajikistan should expand bilateral trade and economic cooperation.  “We plan to import aluminum from Tajikistan and continue cooperating in traditional sectors of economy and agriculture,” Turkmen president said.

Both presidents expressed confidence that the documents that were signed today will be implemented.
