Washington not going to be at war with Tehran, senior US official told reporters in Dushanbe

Date:

Representative of the U.S. Department of State has noted in Dushanbe that Washington is not going to be war with Tehran.

The US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Ambassador Alice Wells, told reporters in Dushanbe yesterday that all measures taken by the United States in recent years are a proportionate response to actions of the Iranian authorities.

Ambassador Wells stressed that all actions of the United States in respect of Iran have been and will be of retaining nature.  She stated that the United States is not on the brink of war [with Iran].

“The goal of the United States is to prevent escalation of violence in the region.  You just look what Iran is doing in Syria, Lebanon and Afghanistan, which borders your country. Chaos and unrest created by Iran pose threat to security and stability of Tajikistan.  The United States takes deterrent measures so that the Iranian authorities understand that all that they do indirectly or directly through subunits of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has detrimental effect on the region,” Ambassador Wells stated.

Yesterday, the US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Ambassador Alice Wells held meetings with Ministers of Internal Affairs and Defense as well as the head of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of Tajikistan.

The meetings were reportedly focused on issues related to bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the United States in providing peace and stability in Afghanistan, combating international terrorism and illicit trafficking in drugs and weapons.
