On Saturday February 29, Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin attended a ceremony of signing of an agreement aimed at bringing peace to Afghanistan, according to the Tajik MFA information department.
The Agreement for Peace in Afghanistan was signed by U.S. officials and Afghanistan’s Taliban representatives in the Qatari capital of Doha under the mediation of Qatar.
The agreement, which was reportedly signed in the presence of foreign ministers of the United States, Norway, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Oman, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, special representatives from Russia, Kazakhstan and Japan, is expected to pave the way for the US to gradually withdraw its troops from Afghanistan.
The Tajik MFA information department says that after signing ceremony Muhriddin has met with United States Secretary M. Pompeo, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan A. Komilov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R. Meredev.
Meanwhile, media reports say the agreement has four points: a timeline of 14 months for the withdrawal of all US and NATO troops from Afghanistan; a Taliban guarantee that Afghan soil will not be used as a launchpad that would threaten the security of the US; the launch of intra-Afghan negotiations by March 10; and a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire.
