President Emomali Rahmon today signed a decree designating elections to the parliament (Majlisi Oli) and local legislatures (Majlis), according to presidential press service.
Under the decree, the election of deputies of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) and members of legislatures (Majlis) of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), provinces, City of Dushanbe, cities and districts will take place on March 1, 2020.
The election of members of the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) will be held on March 27, 2020.
The head of state also sent a list of new members of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) for confirmation to the Majlisi Namoyandagon.
Under the country’s Constitution, the Majlisi Namoyandagon forms the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums, elects and recalls chairman, deputy chairman and members of it upon the recommendation of the President.
Tajikistan’s Parliament (Majlisi Oli) has two chambers: the Assembly of Representatives (Majlisi Namoyandagon) and the National Assembly (Majlisi Milli). Majlisi Namoyandagon has 63 members, elected for a five-year term in, 22 by proportional representation (party list) and 41 in single-seat constituencies. The Majlisi Milli has 33 members, 25 elected for a five-year term by local majlis deputies and eight appointed by the president.
