Citing the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan (GKNB), AKIpress reported on August 2 that former President of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev has been brought to Bishkek.

Akayev has reportedly been earlier declared wanted within the Kumtor corruption probe.

"Along with other former high-ranking officials, Akayev was prosecuted for corruption during the conclusion of the general agreement on the Kumtor project in 1992, making amendments to it in 1994, as well as during the restructuring of the general agreement with the Cameco company in 2003.

Investigators gave legal assessment for all the persons involved in corruption in the implementation of the “Kumtor project during Akayev's presidency. Additionally, the investigation was actively working on restoring historical justice by holding Akayev accountable bringing him to the territory of Kyrgyzstan," says a statement released by the GKNB.

As a result of the taken actions, on August 2, 2021, Askar Akayev was brought to Bishkek, after which he was immediately transferred to the interdepartmental investigation team, the statement said.

Askar Akayev (born November 10, 1944) is a Kyrgyz politician who served as President of Kyrgyzstan from 1990 until being overthrown in the March 2005 Tulip Revolution.

On March 24, 2005, Akayev fled the country with his family, reportedly escaping first to Kazakhstan and then to Russia. Russian president Vladimir Putin invited Akayev to stay in Russia.  His formal resignation did not come until April 4, when a delegation of members of parliament from Kyrgyzstan met him in Russia.  The Kyrgyz Parliament accepted the resignation on April 11, 2005, after stripping him and his family members of special privileges that had been granted to him by the previous parliament. He was also formally stripped of the title of "First President of Kyrgyzstan".

Akayev has reportedly worked as Professor and Senior Researcher of Prigogine Institute for Mathematical Investigations of Complex Systems at Moscow State University.  Together with Andrey Korotayev and George Malinetsky he was a coordinator of the Russian Academy of Sciences Program "System Analysis and Mathematical Modeling of World Dynamics".  He was also Academic Supervisor of the Laboratory for Monitoring the Risks of Socio-Political Destabilization at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow.
