Rahmon receives the European Parliament’s delegation

Date:

On Tuesday February 22, President Emomali Rahmon received the European Union’s delegation led by Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Mr. David McAllister, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

During the meeting, the parties reportedly discussed state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the European Union (EU).

Tajik leader expressed satisfaction with the current level of relationships in political, economic, security and cultural spheres.

The parties reported noted an important role of parliaments in development and expansion of relations as well as significant contribution of the Commission and the EU-Tajikistan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee to the process of expansion of long-term cooperation.

Rahmon appreciated the European Union’s support for Tajikistan during the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

A special attention was reportedly given to the implementation of Tajikistan’s National Development Strategy designed for the period up to 2030 and the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”.

The parties also exchanged views on a number of regional and international regions being of mutual interest, including the current situation in Afghanistan.

They also discussed issues related to jointly addressing global threats and challenges and found it necessary to continue the partnership of the parties within the framework of the BOMCA and CADAP programs.

Meanwhile, the Tajik MFA information department says the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sirojiddin Muhriddin met with the European Parliament’s delegation on February 21.

At the meeting, the parties reportedly discussed issues of bilateral relations between Tajikistan and the European Union, in particular parliamentary relations, the situation in the region, as well as other matters of mutual interest.

The European Parliament's delegations are official groups of MEPs that maintain and deepen relations with the parliaments of non-EU countries, with regions and with organizations.  In this way, delegations serve as Parliament's primary link to other legislatures, at home and abroad.

Relations between Tajikistan and the European Union are governed by a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, signed in 2004 and in force since 2010, which sets up the political, economic and socio-cultural framework of bilateral cooperation.
