The press center of the Surkhandarya regional power grids says that in conditions of abnormally cold weather, Tajikistan has begun supplying electricity to provide regular energy supply of residential customers and social facilities in Uzbekistan’s Surkhandarya region.

According to the press center, electricity supplied from Tajikistan through regar-500 substation 220kV power transmission lines Regar-Zarchop and Regar-Sherabad since February 18 has provided 70 percent of electricity supply in Shurchin, Altyncai, Kumkurgan and Jarkurgan districts and 90 percent of electricity supply in Bandikhan, Kyzyryk, Sherabad, Baisoun, Sariasiay, Uzun and Denau districts.

It is noted that since April 2018, Uzbekistan has purchased Tajik electricity depending on the demand for it.

Recall, some Uzbek media outlets reported last month that several regions of Uzbekistan including the capital city are facing power outage due to a decline of gas supplies to the thermal power stations that generate around 90% of electricity in the country.

Uzbekistan’s Minister of Energy Zhurabek Mirzamahmudov noted in December that the current weather conditions demand the introduction of planned outages to prevent more serious consequences.  The minister noted that planned power outages across the country are inevitable.

Meanwhile, Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national power utility company) has repeatedly denied the supply of electric power to neighboring Uzbekistan in autumn-winter period.

Barqi Tojik has always claimed that Tajikistan supplies electric power to Uzbekistan only during spring-supper period (May-August).
