President signs the law banning “alien garments” and children’s celebrations for two major Islamic holidays

President Emomali Rahmon yesterday signed 35 laws, including the laws on the regulation of celebrations and ceremonies in Tajikistan, responsibility for the education and upbringing of children, the Tajik National University, and calculating indicators (estimated.  

The Tajik president’s official website says the laws on the regulation of celebrations and ceremonies in Tajikistan and responsibility for the education and upbringing of children were adopted in a new version, with the aim of protecting the original values ​​of national culture, preventing superstitions and prejudices, excesses and extravagance in holding celebrations and ceremonies, increasing spirituality and socio-economic level of the Tajik people, as well as protection of the rights and freedoms of the child, studying and learning, education of the child in the spirit of humanity, pride of patriotism, respect for national and universal values.

The adopted laws are reportedly aimed at ensuring the socio-economic development of the country, raising the level and quality of life of the people, strengthening the stability of society, law and order.

The laws will be published in the press.

The law banning “alien garments” and “idgardak” (children's celebrations for two major Islamic holidays — Eid al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha) mostly targets the hijab, or Islamic head scarf, and other traditional items of Islamic clothing, which started coming to Tajikistan in recent years from the Middle East and the country’s officials have associated them with Islamic extremists.
