China denies building military base in Tajikistan

Date:

The Chinese Embassy in Dushanbe on July 15 denied media reports that Beijing is building a military base in Tajikistan as baseless.

"The information disseminated by certain media about the establishment of a Chinese military base on the territory of Tajikistan is groundless," the Embassy said in a statement, according to Deccan Herald.

The statement said the countries re cooperating on controlling cross border organized crime, drug trafficking, and cybercrime.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan has also denied reports of the presence of a secret Chinese military base in the territory of the country.

"As for the reports in some mass media that China has allegedly established a military base in the territory of Tajikistan, we inform you that they are baseless.  This issue was not and is not on the agenda of the Tajik-Chinese negotiations," says a statement released by the Foreign Ministry of Tajikistan on July 12.

The Chinese Embassy in Dushanbe responded to a report released by some media outlets.

Thus, The Telegraph reported on July 10 that China is constructing a secret military base in Tajikistan, satellite images reveal, as it seizes on the rising threat to security posed by Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.  Beijing has reportedly been building the base in one of the most remote corners of the world for almost a decade.

The Telegraph says “the facility, carved out of mountains that rise 13,000ft high, has look-out towers and troops from both countries, which now hold regular joint military drills shown on Chinese state media.”
