70 percent of babies in northern Tajikistan die in first 28 days after birth

DUSHANBE

, May 2, Asia-Plus –

Tajikistan

has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the Central Asian region.

A seminar formally titled “Recovery of Babies and Foundations of Efficient Aid” was held in

Dushanbe

during the last two weeks.

During the seminar it was noted that in the

northern province

of Sughd, 70 percent of babies die in the first 28 days after birth, according to information from the Ministry of Health.

The Health Ministry source says the main cause of high neonatal mortality rates in the country are innate anomalies, birth traumas, etc.

“This problem is very topical for

Tajikistan

because the majority cases of infant mortality in the republic take place because of ineffective aid to babies,” the source stressed.

The seminar was held under support of the UNICEF Country Office with participation of trainers from the World Health Organization.

During two weeks medical workers from

Dushanbe

, Sughd and Khatlon provinces as well as some districts subordinate to the center studied issues related to recovery of babies and foundations of efficient aid to sick babies.
