Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, which were held in Dushanbe on May 27, focused on consular cooperation and the protection of citizens’ rights.

The press center of Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the Tajik delegation was led by Bahodour Safarzoda, Head of the MFA Main Consular Department, while the Kyrgyz side was represented by Seyitek Jumakadyr Uulu, Director of the Consular Service Department of Kyrgyzstan’s MFA.

During the talks, the parties reportedly discussed the current state and prospects of bilateral cooperation, including issues related to the movement and stay of citizens, protection of their rights and interests, and other key aspects of the consular agenda.

The consultations concluded with a mutual commitment to further strengthen cooperation and continue constructive dialogue.

These talks come amid the resolution of one of the region’s longest-standing conflicts.  On March 13, 2025, the presidents of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan—Emomali Rahmon and Sadyr Japarov—signed an agreement on the delimitation of the state border, marking a significant step toward settling the longstanding border dispute.

The agreement also provides for the restoration of transport links between the two countries—road, rail, and air services—which were suspended following the armed conflict in 2022.

Work on the border delimitation began in October 2023, with the completion of the process officially confirmed on December 4, 2024.  Subsequently, both sides started the legal preparation of the final interstate agreement.
