Romit Biosphere Reserve becomes part of the UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves

Date:

On September 27, 2025, at the 37th Session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and Biosphere Program in Hangzhou, China, the Romit Biosphere Reserve has officially been designated as part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

The Foreign Ministry notes that inclusion of Romit reflects Tajikistan’s commitment to sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and the harmonious coexistence of people and nature.

Located in a unique ecological zone, the Romit Biosphere Reserve is known for its rich biodiversity, endemic species, and traditional land-use practices.

As a designated biosphere reserve, Romit will serve as a model site for balancing conservation efforts with the needs of local communities, supporting scientific research, environmental education, and sustainable economic development.

UNESCO designates 26 new biosphere reserves across 21 countries – the highest number in 20 years. The World Network of Biosphere Reserves now includes 785 sites in 142 countries, with an additional one million km² of natural areas brought under protection since 2018 – equivalent to the size of Bolivia.
