DUSHANBE, September 16, 2010, Asia-Plus  — 2 billion U.S. dollar are needed to rehabilitate water supply systems across the country, Mouso Ghafurov, the deputy head of the state unitary enterprise, Khojagii Manzilivu Kommunali (housing and communal services), told reporters in Dushanbe on September 15.

According to him, the water supply situation remains complex in the country despite some successes.  “The most serious situation emerged in Farkhor, Dousti, Zafarobod and Isfara districts,” Ghafurov stressed.

According to official data, some 1.2 million people have been provided with better quality water and some 600,000 other people have got access to safe drinking in recent years.  To resolve water supply problems projects for a total of 500 million U.S. dollars have been implemented in the country so far and more than 58 percent of the country’s population now has access to the centralized water supply system.

Ghafurov noted that donors and international organizations were providing assistance to Tajikistan in improving water supply.  “Last year, the World Bank provided 19 million somoni for rehabilitation of the country’s water supply system; besides, the Government of Tajikistan every year allocates 4 million somoni for these purposes,” he stressed.
