KULOB, August 31, 2010, Asia-Plus — Six new cases of HIV infection have been detected in the Kulob zone of Khatlon province in July-August this year, bringing the number of officially registered HIV sufferers in the area to 280, Tohir Tumanov, the director of the Kulob AIDS Center, told reporters on August 30.
According to him, more than 70 percent (194 people) of the officially registered HIV sufferers in the region live in the city of Kulob. “Farkhor district has five officially registered HIV sufferers, Kulob district – three, Shuroobod, Temourmalik and Hamadoni districts – two each, and Danghara and Vose district – one each,” Tumanov said.
Of 280 officially registered HIV sufferers in the Kulob zone, 219 are men. Tumanov noted that 60 HIV sufferers have died in the region since 2003, when the first case of the HIV infection was registered in Kulob.
