DUSHANBE, May 13, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan now supplies electricity to Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan in small volumes, Asia-plus ahs learned from a source in Barqi Tojik power holding (Tajik electricity supplier).

The source, however, refrained from specifying the electricity export volumes.  According to him, Tajikistan now produces 40-41 million kWh of electricity per day, which exceeds the country’s requirements in electricity.

Deputy Energy and Industries Minister, Poulod Muhiddinov, says that in the summer period, Tajik power plants are capable to generate more than 3 billion kWh of electric power.  “These volumes exceed the country’s domestic requirements in electricity, and therefore, we are seeking ways to sell surplus electricity,” the deputy minister said.  Muhiddinov noted that Tajikistan was going to increase electricity deliveries to Afghanistan this summer but the Afghan side would complete construction of the power transmission line only in early autumn.
