DUSHANBE, March 31, 2010, Asia-Plus — Iran supports the construction of hydropower facilities in Tajikistan which will certainly improve the well-being of the Tajik people, Second Secretary of the Iranian Embassy in Tajikistan Hasani Karrobi spoke today at the International scientific and practical conference “Republic of Tajikistan in the system of geopolitical interests of world and regional powers.”

Tajikistan, he said, has no such huge hydrocarbon resources as some other countries of the region but has a huge hydropower potential.

“Iran is one of the most experienced countries in terms of construction of hydropower facilities and our companies are ready to provide assistance to Tajikistan in this sphere,” he said.

He reminded of the Iranian Farob company engaged in the construction of Sangtuda-2 HPP in Tajikistan on Vakhsh River which is expected to be completed by 2012.

Hasani Karrobi has assured the participants that Iran is planning to develop cooperation with Tajikistan in this sector.

He believes that cultural and language commonalities between the two peoples as well as high level of trust between the leaders of the two states should be used in the interests of the two countries.

According to Karrobi, in late April this year Tehran will host the joint meeting of foreign ministers of Tajikistan, Iran, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan during which the issue of strengthening of energy cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran is expected to be discussed.
