KHUJAND, March 9, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Ziyodullo Jurayev, chief of the military registration and enlistment office in Sughd’s Zafarobod district, and Muzaffar Isoboyev, head of urology unit with the Sughd regional hospital in Khujand, were detained by officers from the Sughd anticorruption directorate on March 8 on suspicion of having been involved in bribery.

The source at the Sughd anticorruption directorate told Asia-Plus Tuesday afternoon that they received an application from resident of Zafarobod district, A.B., who says that the Zafarobod chief recruitment officer has demanded 1,000 U.S. dollars from him for “white chit” (certificate of exemption from military service) for his sick son.

“Jurayev allegedly demanded this amount through Muzaffar Isoboyev, head of the urology unit within the Sughd regional hospital,” said the source, “Isoboyev also took US$150 from him for his “services.”

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against Jurayev and Isoboyev under the provisions of Article 319, Parts ‘B’ and ‘C’ (the reception of bribe by a group of persons in the preliminary collusion) of Tajikistan’s Penal Code and an investigation is under way.
