DUSHANBE, March 2, 2010, Asia-Plus  — The Social-Democratic Party (SDPT) that has never made it into parliament intends to appeal against the election results.

It is difficult to call the past parliamentary elections democratic and transparent and meeting international standards, SDPT leader Rahmatillo Zoirov announced at a news conference in Dushanbe on March 2.

According to him, the election campaign was held relatively well, while many serious irregularities and falsifications were registered on election day.

Concerning a statement by the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) that SDPT failed to pass the 5 percent threshold needed to get a seat in parliament, Mr. Zoirov said the results released on March 1 do not correspondent to the facts.  “In Dushanbe alone, some 105,000 people voted for SDPT, which is already 13-15 percent of votes,” he noted.

Zoirov added that according to official data, the other opposition party, the Islamic Revival Party (IRPT), got only 7.7 percent of votes.  IRPT has substantial support among the country’s population and the results released by the CCER do not correspondent to the facts, he said.

“The ruling party does not want to see us in parliament and we intend to appeal against the election results,” SDPT leader said.
