DUSHANBE, February 12, 2010, Asia-Plus — In connection with cold weather and heavy snowfalls that have hit the country over the past several days, Barqi Tojik power holding (Tajik electricity supplier) has increased electricity production, Nozirjon Yodgori, a spokesman for Barqi Tojik, told Asia-Plus today.
According to him, the supply of daily electricity has been increased from 45-46 million kWh to 50-51 million kWh, which is nearly two times more than in the same period of last year (in February 2009, Tajikistan was producing 26.5 million kWh of electricity per day).
He noted that it has become possible due to high levels of waters at reservoirs of the country’s hydropower plants and nationwide switch to energy-saving light bulbs.
He added that the regions have had 10-11 hours of electricity per day since February 1.
Water levels at the reservoir powering the Norak HPP are currently at the level of 879 meters, which is 18 meters higher than in February 2009, the spokesman said.
