DUSHANBE, December 28, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The 28th pre-election congress of the Communist Party (CPT) that took place in Dushanbe on December 26 confirmed a party list of 10 candidates for the parliamentary elections set for February 28, 2010.

67 delegates having the right of voting, several dozens of members of the party and representatives of media attended the congress.

Presenting the party’s pre-election platform, the CPT leader Shodi Shabdolov noted that the main objective of the CPT program was in strict observance of norms of the country’s Constitution regarding ensuring rights and freedoms of citizens and creation of conditions for strengthening of democracy and independence of the country.

On the economic situation in the country, Shabdolov stressed that Tajik Communists should not fold their hands when the whole world was making shift to national regulation of economy.  “We must work for returning Tajikistan to the Socialist structure,” he said. 

The party list of 10 candidates is topped by Shabdolov himself.  Besides, among the candidates on the list part list are Ismoil Talbakov, Gufron Rustamov, Azim Nasimov, Sharif Safarov, Haidarsho Pirumshoyev, Shamsiddin Rahimov, Ikromiddin Nematov, Yusuf Jaffarov and Zarragul Mirhasanova.

We will recall that of 63 seats in the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament), 22 seats come from party lists. The remainder is elected in first-past-the-post races.

The Communist Party of Tajikistan was founded in 1918 and it was registered with the Ministry of Justice on 1991.  CPT now reportedly numbers 45,000 members.
