KHUJAND, February 8, 2012, Asia-Plus  — Hasan Abduazizov, 42, from the Gulkhona jamoat in Sughd’s Jabborrasoulov district has died from rabies six months after receiving dog bite in July 2011, according to the Sughd police directorate.

Local prosecutor’s office is investigating the incident.

An official source at the Sughd center for sanitary and epidemiological supervision says eight persons, including five children aged 5 to 14, died of rabies from stray dog bites last year.  “Five of them did not seek health care,” said he.  “Hasan Abduazizov also did not seek medical aid.”

Some 7,000 victims of animal bites (wolf, dog, rat and other animal bites) were registered in the province last year (in 2010, 5,836 victims of animal bites were reported in the area).

“Practically all of them have received medical advice and got doses of rabies vaccine,” the source noted.

According to him, a person who is exposed and has never been vaccinated against rabies should get 6 doses of rabies vaccine – one dose costs 90.00 somoni.  “Some persons do not get the doses of rabies vaccines because of shortage of money,” the source added.

Rabies is a viral infection of the central nervous system, usually contracted from the bite of an infected animal, and nearly always fatal without postexposure prophylaxis.
