DUSHANBE, November 2, Asia-Plus — Yesterday evening, President Emomali Rahmonov met with Carlos Pinerua, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission to Tajikistan.   

According to presidential press service, the meeting focused on two programs of cooperation between Tajikistan and the IMF.

The source said that one of this program designed for three years is aimed at supporting economic development and poverty reduction in Tajikistan.  The Fund is expected to provide US$50 million for implementation of this program.

The second program is aimed at supporting economic policy of the country, according to the source.  

The sides also considered issues related to the present situation in Tajikistan.  

The IMF mission to Tajikistan headed by Carlos Pinerua arrived in Tajikistan on October 20.  During its stay in Tajikistan the mission has held talks with Tajikistan’s economic team and familiarized itself with the results of work carried out by key ministries of the economic block over the first three quarters of this year, as well as planning of the national budget for 2007 and the current economic indices.    

The purpose of the present visit is for the mission to project a strategy of management of Tajikistan’s external debt and work out macroeconomic basis, allowing to keep economic stability in the country.  The mission’s visit to Tajikistan concludes tomorrow, November 3.
