DUSHANBE, November 16, Asia-Plus – The National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) intends to order for additional banknotes and coins in Germany and Russia.

The Deputy NBT Chairman, Ahmadjon Sharifjonov, said that coins will be minted at the St. Petersburg mint and banknotes will be published in Germany.

According to him, the Tajik side stated this at a conference formally titled Banknote 2006 that was held in Washington from November 5 to November 8.   “The conference brought together more than 400 specialists from the United States, Japan, China, the CIS states, Interpol and Europol,” Sharifjonov said.   .

Sharifjonov said that during its staying in Washington, a Tajik delegation had held a number of meetings with specialists from Russia, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Uzbekistan to discuss cooperation issues.

The NBT official noted that Tajikistan’s requirements in additional number of banknotes and coins are increasing from year to year.  “The country’s economy is developing and the NBT intends to increase the volume of cash-in-hand being in circulation,” the NBT deputy head said.

According to him, at present cash-in-hand for a total amount of some 200 million somonis is in circulation in the republic.

The conference in Washington brought together leaders in the banknote community from industry and government to discuss and explore the emerging trends and leading technologies in the banknote industry.  Founded specifically as a forum for this specialized community, Banknote 2006 was the fourth biannual conference on the banknote industry. Banknote 2006 was a working conference with a single goal of providing a venue for those organizations – both government and industry – with an interest in the direction of banknote usage in the coming decades.  International speakers from manufacturers, suppliers, governments and law enforcement agencies reviewed and discussed all aspects of banknote design, production, issuance and usage.
