DUSHANBE, May 18, Asia-Plus – Like other countries in the world Tajikistan is marking International Museum Day today.

On this occasion, the National Museum named after Kamoliddin Behzod organized a scientific conference on a role of museum in development of national culture today morning.

The source at the museum said that the conference have brought together representatives from the main museums of the country as well as representatives from the Academy of Sciences and known Tajik artistes.  The conference is discussing issues related to development of museums in the country and addressing challenges facing them.

In parallel, an exhibition of works by known Tajik painters has been opened in the museum today.

In the meantime, by culture minister’s order Abduvali Sharipov replaced Gulchehra Noumonova as director of the National Kamoliddin Behzod Museum in Dushanbe.

More than 40 regional, city, and district museums current function in Tajikistan.  The most known of them are the National Kamoliddin Behzod Museum and the National Museum of Antiquities in Dushanbe.

International Museum Day has been celebrated all over the world since 1977.  Each year, a theme is decided on by the Advisory Committee.  The event provides the opportunity for museum professionals to meet the public and alert them to the challenges that museums face if they are to be – as in the ICOM (International Council of Museums) definition of museums – “an institution in the service of society and of its development”.

It has been recommended that this celebration be held each year on May 18 in the spirit of the motto: “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”  The ICOM Secretariat invites all members to celebrate International Museum Day around 18 May.
