DUSHANBE, March 18, Asia-Plus  – The Social-Democratic Party of Tajikistan turns 10 today.

On this occasion, the party is giving a jubilee press conference in Dushanbe today.

По словам источника, на встрече с представителями СМИ будут обсуждены некоторые важные вопросы.

A source at the SDPT said that the party will make a statement on legality of the resolution of the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) on transferring six villages of GBAO’s Darvoz district to jurisdiction of Tavildara the district subordinate to the center (RRP).  “By this resolution the upper house of the parliament has broken constitutional regulations because the territory of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) can be changed only with consent of the GBAO regional legislature,” the source said.

We will recall that the 14th session of the Majlisi Milli on March 6 passed a resolution to transfer Darvoz’s villages Sayod, Sayodi Nav, Khur, Ghurum, Vujun and Sabzikharv to the Tavildara district.

In the meantime, according to Article 81 of the Constitution of the Republican of Tajikistan, the territory of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) cannot be changed without the consent of the GBAO regional legislature (Majlis).

We will recall that the constituent assembly of the Social-Democratic Party   was held in Dushanbe on March 18, 1998.  The party chairman is Rahmatillo Zoirov.

The Social-Democratic Party was originally registered with the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) as the Party of Justice and Development (Adolat va Tarraqiyot) on February 5, 1999.  A MoJ requested that same year that the Supreme Court ban the party’s activities and its registration was canceled.  The party reemerged and was registered under its current name on December 20, 2002.  According to the SDPT board, the party now has 6,500 members.
