DUSHANBE, June 18, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon has criticized activities of the energy sector.
His criticism, directed at heads of energy entities, came during an address to a meeting of senior representatives of the country’s energy sector at the head office of Barqi Tojik (Tajik electric systems) power holding in Dushanbe on June 17.
Speaking at the meeting, which was televised by both national TV channels, President Emomali Rahmon, in particular, suggested that electricity rationing should be introduced in the regions starting from September 1. The president noted that electricity rationing could be introduced in September, when there is still hot weather and saved electrical power could be supplied to the population during winter months.
Besides, Rahmon noted that annual power losses in the country amount to 2.9 billion kWh, which is 29 percent of the total volume of electricity generated in the country. “If we manage to minimize power losses there will be no necessity in importing electricity from other countries,” the president said, noting that during the last autumn-winter season, Tajikistan imported some 1.4 billion kWh of electricity from neighboring countries.
We will recall that electricity rationing is usually introduced in Tajikistan in early October and last through April of the next year. The measures are introduced in all regions except Dushanbe and seek to curb the country’s rising electricity consumption.
