KHUJAND, February 19, 2009, Asia-Plus — Serious energy crisis has forced a number of large industrial enterprises in the northern city of Qairoqqum to suspend their work.
Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, the head of the industry department within the Qairoqqum mayor’s office, Fazliddin Oripov, said that five of 13 industrial enterprises based in the city were not in operation now.
“Two of them – open joint-stock company OJSC, Leninabad Rare Metals Plant (LRRMP), and the Adrasman Ore Refinery – have suspended operations because of the global financial crisis, while three others, including limited liability company Taftins (production of synthetic carpets), closed joint-stock company (CJSC) Dolomit (marble aggregate production), and OJSC Qolinhoi Sughd (carpet weaving), have been suspended for lack of electricity,” Oripov said.
Despite the severe electricity shortages, Qairoqqum produced a total of 6 million somoni worth of output in January 2009. Compared to January 2008 the index of the volume of production of output amounted to 101.8 percent, according to Oripov.
