DUSHANBE, March 6, 2009, Asia-Plus  — President Emomali Rahmon today congratulated women of Tajikistan on International Women’s Day and wished them health, peace, happiness and wellbeing.

In the meantime, President Rahmon today signed a decree, under which March 8 is now celebrated in Tajikistan as Mother’s Day.

In his message of congratulations posted on presidential website, Rahmon, in particular, noted that the festival we celebrate every year in early March had a centenarian history, in the meantime, according to history of our ancestors, the festival dedicated to women was celebrated more than three thousand years ago.

“At that time, approximately in late February – early March, Aryan men had been giving marks of respect to their mothers and wives.  According to the medieval prominent scholar Aburayhon Beruni, that festival was called in Persian “Muzhdagiron.  Today, our independent state should resume celebration of our national festival – Mother’s Holiday.”
