KHOROG, May 5, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Only one veteran of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, Safar Khojayev, now lives in Khorog, the regional center of Gorno Badakhshan.

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Nazrullo Khairulloyev, an official with the GBAO regional administration, said that more than 2,500 residents of Gorno Badakhshan had participated in World War II.  At present, only 48 war veterans and 90 workers of the home front live in the region.

Local authorities will provide financial assistance to the war veterans and workers of the home front on occasion of the Victory Day, Khairulloyev said.  Besides, local enterprises and organizations will also provide assistance to veterans.
