KULOB, June 11, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Over the first five months of this year, banks and microlending organizations in Khatlon’s Kulob region have provided more than 38.4 million somoni in loans to local entrepreneurs and farms, the head of the branch of National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) Abdukarim Nematov told Asia-Plus today.

According to him, it is almost two times fewer compared to the first quarter of last year, when a total loan portfolio of banks operating in the region amounted to 71.5 million somoni.

Nematov noted that significant decrease in the loan volumes had resulted from delays in repayment of loans provided in the previous years.  “As of June 1, 2009, the Kulob loan debts have amounted to 105,130,379 somoni,” he said, adding that local banks now prefer to give loans to commercial organizations than farming units.
