DUSHANBE, July 12, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan will receive $1.5 million grant from the multi-donor Climate Investment Funds to strengthen the country’s capacity to analyze and develop climate-change mitigation programs, Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Resident Mission in Tajikistan said on July 12.

The assistance is the Phase I under the Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR) to Tajikistan. The PPCR Phase I is a partnership among the Government of Tajikistan, Asian Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and World Bank.

Tajikistan has been selected as one of nine countries and two regions in the world to participate in the PPCR.

Tajikistan will conduct institutional analysis and capacity needs for climate resilience; climate science and impact modeling partnership; awareness-raising campaign on projected climate change impacts; analysis of sustainable land management and river basin approaches for changing climate conditions; and enhancement of climate resilience of the energy sector.

These activities have been identified through extensive consultations with the government, civil society, private sector and donor organizations.

The PPCR Phase I will also help design a larger Strategic Program for Climate Resilience to support climate adaptation investments under Phase II, which is being considered in the amount of $50-60 million.

The Climate Investment Funds are unique financing instruments designed to support low-carbon and climate-resilient development through scaled-up financing channeled through the African Development Bank, ADB, EBRD, Inter-American Development Bank, and World Bank Group.
