DUSHANBE, July 20, 2010, Asia-Plus  — In Tajikistan, some 260,000 households home to more than 925,000 people are located in risk-prone areas and they must be relocated to safe places, the head of the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES), Khaibullo Latipov told reporters in Dushanbe on July 20.

According to him, a five-year program for relocation of people to safe areas has been implemented in the country since 2008.  “The program provides for relocation of 600 households to safe areas per year,” said Latipov, “We consider it is necessary to review the program and increase the number of settlers because the program does not cover all the risk-prone areas in the country.”

The CES head stressed that the government was currently developing changes to the program.  “However, it is necessary to find funds for implementation of the program,” he said.

Latipov added  that 1,500 households have been relocated under this program over the past two and half years.
