On 16 May 2012, Mr. Takaaki KOMATSU, Third Secretary, Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Tajikistan and Mr. Vali ASHUROV, Chairperson of Nosiri Khusrav district attended a handover ceremony of the agricultural project at Istiqlol jamoat, Nosiri Khusrav district.

“The Project for Rehabilitation of Irrigation System in Istiqlol Jamoat, Nosiri Khusrav District” for the total amount of US$105,384 supported by the Government of Japan in the framework of Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP), has been successfully implemented.

Being located in remote areas, agriculture is a main means of making a living for people in Nosiri Khusrav district. Local farmers had suffered from low agricultural productivity which was caused by water shortage and inefficient use of land in Istiqlol Jamoat. Due to lack of existing water resource as well as poorly maintained water canals, only 4ha out of 130ha of the target land was irrigated.

In the framework of the project, metallic pipes in length of 300m and a pump station with two pumps were installed in order to irrigate more than 100ha lands properly. After the project implementation, various kinds of vegetables will be cultivated and about 5ha of a recently established orchard will be irrigated. As a result, agricultural productivity of target land will be improved. Consequently, the income level of local people will be increased which will ensure better life condition of local people in Nosiri Khusrav district.
