The British, Indian, and Pakistani Ambassadors to Tajikistan, along with diplomatic representation from the Embassy of Canada in Astana, British and Commonwealth citizens, and a number of veterans of World War II and other conflicts from Tajikistan and the UK, joined in the ceremony to remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in war time.

The British Ambassador and Representatives of the Council of Veterans of the Republic of Tajikistan underlined the importance in remembering all those who gave their lives to bring peace and stability to the world, the British Embassy in Dushanbe said.

Since 1919, the United Kingdom and most Commonwealth countries have commemorated the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and civilians in times of war, on the Sunday closest to 11 November. This date signifies the formal end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Annually Commonwealth countries express their support for The Royal British Legion”s charity work through the Poppy Appeal, which runs for 3 weeks immediately prior to Remembrance Sunday.  Poppies are worn in the days before and after 11 November as a sign of remembrance, and are produced by the Royal British Legion, the UK”s association of ex-service men and women.
