DUSHANBE, March 26, 2015, Asia-Plus – Kyrgyz researcher proposes to adopt Tajikistan’s experience in constructing small hydroelectric power plants (HPPs)

Kyrgyz media sources report that speaking at a roundtable in Bishkek, Professor Kalyi Rahimov, who is the member of the Supervisory Board on the Initiative of Transparency in the Energy Sector under the Ministry of Energy and Industry of Kyrgyzstan, proposed on March 26 to adopt Tajikistan’s experience in constructing small HPPs.

“Eight small HPPs are currently being built in Tajikistan; five of them are being built under financial support of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and construction of three others has been funded by the government,” Rahimov said.

“The Tajik government finds money for construction of small HPPs,” said Kyrgyz researcher.  “It is possible to construct small HPPs every two-three years.”

According to data of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, there are 318 small HPPs in Tajikistan and they generated a total of 33.4 million kWh of electricity last year.  Meanwhile, more than half of them (170) are not in operation during autumn-winter period.
