DUSHANBE, April 21, 2016, Asia-Plus – Tajik Frist Deputy Foreign Minister, Nizomiddin Zohidi, yesterday received a new Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Tajikistan, Dragan Aleksoski.

According to the Tajik MFA information department, the two discussed state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and IOM as well as the future joint projects and programs that will be implemented in Tajikistan.

Zohidi and Aleksoski also exchanged views on issues related to regulation of the labor migration, including rights and duties of labor migrants and their social protection.

Ensuring safe movement of migrants to and from Tajikistan is of critical importance.  Each year, nearly 10% of the population leaves Tajikistan to seek better employment opportunities abroad. Remittances sent home keep many families above the poverty line.

Tajikistan has been an IOM member nation since November 1994.

The IOM Mission in Tajikistan has adopted programs aimed at extracting the most potential of the migration flow.  Programs for labor migrants include capacity building opportunities to increase migrants’ skills prior to their departure abroad.  IOM together with its partners has also established many services for migrants and their families so incomes earned abroad may be productively used, saved, and invested as a tool to enhance their own development potential.

IOM takes the lead in Tajikistan in combating the trafficking of human beings, and has projects to enhance the capacity of law enforcement and judges to investigate, prosecute and judge human traffickers and protect victims.
