DUSHANBE, June 30, 2016, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan has denounced an agreement with Kyrgyzstan on simplification of the naturalization procedure.

The last sitting of the second session of Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament) of the fifth convocation, presided over by it head, Shukurjon Zuhurov, took place on June 30.

Majlisi Namoyandagon deputies unanimously voted for denouncement of the agreement between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on simplification of the naturalization procedure without discussion.

The agreement between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on simplification of the naturalization procedure was signed in 2002.

Parliamentarians also unanimously voted for denouncement of an agreement between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on simplified procedures for termination of citizenship of Tajikistan and acquisition of citizenship of Kyrgyzstan.

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan signed the agreement on simplified procedures for termination of citizenship of Tajikistan and acquisition of citizenship of Kyrgyzstan in 2004.

Speaking at the sitting, Deputy Foreign Minister, Mahmadsharif Haqdod, said denouncement of the mentioned agreements had been initiated by President Emomali Rahmon.

“These agreements have accomplished their purposes and tasks, and in the future, the issue of termination or acquisition of citizenship of Tajikistan will be regulated by the country’s law on citizenship that was adopted in 2015,” Haqdod said.

Majlisi Namoyandagon speaker, for his part, noted that Dushanbe and Bishkek did not have an agreement on dual citizenship.

“Existence of the mentioned agreements can create problems with solution of border disputes with Kyrgyzstan,” Zuhurov noted.
