DUSHANBE, August 10, 2016, Asia-Plus – On Tuesday August 9, Oxfam Office in Tajikistan held a side event on Oxfam’s approach to ensuring that no one is left behind in access to water and sanitation; linking policy, practice and research in Dushanbe on the sidelines of the High-Level Symposium on SDG 6 and Targets.
Press release issued by Oxfam Tajikistan, in particular, says, “We are witnessing more competing and complex global demands on water, which are being compounded by the insecurity and effects of climate change. As a result, a wider range of people in both low and middle income countries are being affected, not only in times of disaster, but also on a daily basis.”
To tackle this, Oxfam GB will build on its established foundation, knowledge and experience in humanitarian WASH over the past 50 years, and will now extend its portfolio to address wider global challenges of water insecurity.
This new strategic approach reportedly seeks to achieve systemic change by tackling the root causes of both poor management and resource allocation within the water sector. Oxfam GB will aim to deliver lasting impacts for people, specifically women, living in poverty by convening emergency and development actors to strengthen the link between development, relief, and rehabilitation. This combined approach will channel a more unified approach to tackling the global water crisis.
Using examples of practical solutions to improving water resource management, governance and finance models from MENA (the Middle East and Northern Africa region), Asia and Tajikistan will demonstrate innovative ways to reducing inequalities through pro-poor approaches.
This side event reportedly addressed Oxfam’s contribution to SDG6, and also how to align with other SDG’s to ensure a holistic approach with more resilient actions in a changing world.
