On Thursday February 16, Ms. Chie Tamura, Head of the Economic Cooperation Department of the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, attended the handover ceremony for “The Project for Provision of Medical Equipment for the Pediatric Unit of the Republican Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery of Tajikistan.”

According to Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, the ceremony was held to commemorate the successful completion of the project that was funded by the Government of Japan through its scheme of “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).”  The ceremony was attended by the head of the Center Mr. Jumakhon Rahmonov.

For the realization of the project, USD 87,454 was provided to the Center for Cardiovascular Surgery of Tajikistan in Dushanbe City.  The center is located in the heart of the capital city and it annually provides healthcare services to more than 4000 patients coming from different regions of Tajikistan.

Prior to the implementation of the project, the Centre for Cardiovascular Surgery was in need of necessary equipment, as the most part of medical equipment had been utilized for more than 30 years and become obsolete. With the successful project completion, the necessary medical equipment is now installed in the Center including echocardiography machine, cardiac monitor, coagulator, cardiac defibrillator with monitor, etc.

During her speech at the handover ceremony, Ms. Tamura remarked that the GGP projects demonstrate the friendship and cooperation between the people of Tajikistan and the people of Japan. Mr. Jumakhon Rahmonov expressed his gratitude for the support of creating improved environment that benefits all the patients and workers of the hospital.

“Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project” (GGP) is a scheme within Japan’s Official Development Assistance. GGP in particular implements grassroots-level projects in various sectors throughout the Republic of Tajikistan. Recipients of GGP grants include local governments, educational and medical institutions, and NGOs.  As of today, GGP has supported 362 projects in Tajikistan, for which US$ 29.3 million has been allocated since 1996.
