In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, the head of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CES) under the Government of Tajikistan, Rustam Nazarov noted on July 20 that more than 100,000 people in Tajikistan live in disaster-prone areas.
According to him, there are 284 such areas in Tajikistan.
Nazarov noted that they had worked out a new CES management structure and submitted it for consideration to the government.
The new management structure reportedly provides for raising the Committee’s technical potential and establishing emergency management departments or sections in all districts across the country.
“Over the first six months of this year, natural disasters have left 27 dead and damage caused by them to the country’s economy has been estimated at more than 14.5 million somoni,” said the head of the Tajik emergencies agency. “63 people have drowned in lakes and rivers this year.”
