President Emomali Rahmon’s official visit to Azerbaijan, which is scheduled for August 10-11, is expected to result in signing of a number cooperation documents, a source in the Tajik government told Asia-Plus in an interview. 

While in Baku, Emomali Rahmon will hold talks with his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev, Azeri Prime Minister Novruz Mammadov and Azeri Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov.

Energy, non-ferrous metallurgy, agriculture, light industry and transportation are priority areas in bilateral economic cooperation between Tajikistan and Azerbaijan and Tajik aluminum may become one of the main subjects to be discussed during Tajik president’s visit to Azerbaijan, the source noted.  

Recall, Tajikistan is expected to increase production of primary aluminum next year.  “Current international price for one ton of primary aluminum is 2,199 U.S. dollars, while in the next year, the aluminum prices are expected to rise even more, and therefore and therefore, Tajikistan plans to increase aluminum production next year to 245,500 tons,” Tajik Minister of Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Nematullo Hikmatullozoda, told reporters in Dushanbe on August 3. 

Diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Azerbaijan were established on May 29, 1992.  Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, bilateral and multilateral relations of Tajikistan with Azerbaijan have been developing in the spirit of mutual respect.  Tajikistan and Azerbaijan are partners at the international level in the framework of organizations such as UN, OSCE and CIS.

Current legal foundation of Tajikistan-Azerbaijan bilateral cooperation includes more than 30 agreements and treaties.
