On Tuesday May 28, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Dushanbe Mayor Rustam Emomali participated in the celebrations dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the formation of the Tajik Border Troops, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

The celebrations took place at the Border Troops Training Center “Poitakht.”

A military parade was held at the Training Center on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the formation of the Tajik Border Troops.

Border Guards Day is a former Soviet holiday that celebrates the border guard services of Russia and former Soviet republics.  It is currently observed in Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Moldova on May 28 — the day of the anniversary of the formation of the Soviet Border Troops in 1918.

Tajikistan has recognized May 28 as Border Guards Day since its independence in 1991 and celebrates the holiday similarly to Russia.  2014 celebrated the 20th anniversary since the formation of the Tajik Border Troops. In honor of this anniversary, a military parade was held in Dushanbe.

The Border Troops, also called the Border Service, is the border security force of Tajikistan.  The border guards are trained by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, along with the Afghan Border Police.  A higher education college is located in the capital, Dushanbe, the Border Troops Academy, and a Border Troops Training Center is located in the Roudaki district.
