The results of Tajikistan’s parliamentary elections, held on March 2, have been announced.

Bakhtiyor Khudoyorzoda, Chairman of the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums (CCER), revealed the results on March 3 in Dushanbe, in the presence of representatives of political parties, parliamentary candidates, international observers, and journalists.

Based on preliminary results, Khudoyorzoda declared the People's Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) as the winner and announced that the Communist Party of Tajikistan (CPT) had lost its parliamentary seats.

 

PDPT victory and CPT defeat

According to the CCER chairman, votes cast in the national electoral district for party lists were distributed as follows:

·         People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT)12 seats (2,435,541 votes – 51.9%)

·         Agrarian Party of Tajikistan (APT)5 seats (986,887 votes – 21%)

·         Party of Economic Reforms of Tajikistan (PERT)3 seats (595,281 votes – 12.7%)

·         Socialist Party of Tajikistan (SPT)1 seat (248,064 votes – 5.3%)

·         Democratic Party of Tajikistan (DPT)1 seat (237,563 votes – 5.1%)

·         Communist Party of Tajikistan (CPT)0 seats (89,738 votes – 1.9%)

·         Votes against all political parties50,895 votes (1.1%).

This means that the Communist Party of Tajikistan failed to secure any seats in parliament.

Victory on both fronts: parliamentary election results for single-mandate constituencies

CCER Chairman Bakhtiyor Khudoyorzoda also announced the preliminary voting results for 41 single-mandate constituencies.

Although he did not specify the party affiliation of the winning candidates, Asia-Plus analyzed the election results published by political parties on social media and determined that:

  • 37 constituencies were won by PDPT (People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan)
  • 2 constituencies were won by PERT (Party of Economic Reforms of Tajikistan)
  • 2 constituencies were won by APT (Agrarian Party of Tajikistan)

Summary of election results

       According to Bakhtiyor Khudoyorzoda, 85.3% of eligible voters participated in the elections.

The People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) won 49 out of 63 seats, gaining two additional seats compared to the previous parliament.

       The Agrarian Party of Tajikistan (APT) retained 7 seats, repeating its results from the last five years.

       The Party of Economic Reforms of Tajikistan (PERT) also retained 5 seats, repeating its previous election performance.

       The Democratic Party of Tajikistan (DPT) and the Socialist Party of Tajikistan (SPT) each secured 1 seat, the same as five years ago.

       The Communist Party of Tajikistan (CPT) failed to win a single seat, even through single-member districts. For the first time in history, CPT has no representation in Tajikistan’s parliament.

        The Social Democratic Party of Tajikistan (SDPT) did not participate in the elections and did not provide any official explanation for its absence. Although the party had previously contested elections, it has never won a parliamentary seat.
