Press release, EBRD Resident Office in Tajikistan

On April 1, a formal opening of two demonstration sites took place in Bokhtar, showcasing innovative solutions in sustainable energy and agriculture.

Press release issued by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Resident Office in Tajikistan says the projects are being implemented by the EBRD under the Green Economy Financing Program of Tajikistan (GEFF II Tajikistan) with support from donors from South Korea, Austria, and the Green Climate Fund.

The GEFF II Tajikistan program plays a crucial role in supporting the country's transition to a green economy, providing US$50 million in financing aimed at increasing investments in green technologies across the agriculture, residential, and commercial sectors through local partner financial institutions: Arvand Bank, Investment and Credit Bank of Tajikistan (ICB), MDO Imon International, and MDO Humo.

The program also focuses on gender inclusion, providing female entrepreneurs and business owners with more opportunities to access financing for sustainable and energy-efficient solutions.

Breakthrough solutions for sustainable energy

One of the key projects is the hybrid solar photovoltaic system installed at the MDO Humo branch in Bokhtar.  This demonstration site serves as a clear example of how modern technologies can reduce electricity costs, enhance energy efficiency, and address energy supply issues, especially in rural and remote areas of Tajikistan.

Key features of the system include:

  • Solar panels that harness renewable energy to generate electricity.
  • An energy storage system that ensures continuous power supply even during periods of low solar activity.

The process of generating and consuming electricity is displayed on a separate screen in the customer service section, which promotes the principles of sustainable development and green technologies.

This project underscores MDO Humo's commitment to using sustainable and efficient technologies and demonstrates its efforts to reduce the carbon footprint while improving business conditions.

Innovative technologies for sustainable agriculture

The second innovation demonstration site, opened in the 8-Marta village of Vakhsh district at the "Tanzila" dehkan farm, a borrower of Arvand Bank, became the first platform to showcase highly efficient, technologically advanced, and environmentally friendly solutions in agriculture.

The site includes:

  • Greenhouses with drip irrigation systems that reduce water consumption by 50-70% and increase crop yields.
  • Energy-efficient solar panels providing independent power supply.
  • Biogas production systems that convert organic waste into valuable energy resources.
  • Vertical farming that increases agricultural production in limited spaces.

This project aims to demonstrate how green technologies can significantly improve farm efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and enhance profitability for local farmers.

Strategic goal of the project

The demonstration sites are part of a larger EBRD initiative to introduce innovative technologies in Tajikistan.  As part of the GEFF II Tajikistan program, additional sites will be created to demonstrate other innovative green technologies in various regions of the country.

These platforms will provide local farmers and businesses with access to the latest solutions that promote productivity, sustainable development, reduction of climate risks, and the creation of a more environmentally friendly economy.

The EBRD is one of the leading international investors in Tajikistan. To date, it has provided over €1 billion for the implementation of 183 projects in the republic.
