On Wednesday, June 4, the session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) resulted in the formal approval of three political factions and one independent group.

According to the Majlisi Namoyandagon press service, the new factions were established by the following political parties:

  1. People's Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) – 42 members, led by Sharif Hakimzoda;
  2. Agrarian Party of Tajikistan (APT) – 7 members, led by Rustam Latifzoda;
  3. Party of Economic Reforms of Tajikistan (PERT) – 5 members, led by Giyosiddin Ashourzoda.

In addition, a group of 7 independent deputies was formed, led by Nasrullo Mahmoudzoda.

The session was chaired by the Majlisi Namoyandagon Speaker, Fayzali Iddizoda.

Shuhrat Ghanizoda, Chairman of the Majlisi Namoyandagon Commission for Agenda Control and Work Organization, emphasized the legal justification for creating these factions in accordance with the country’s Constitution.

According to Tajikistan's legislation, a party in the lower house of Parliament must have at least 5 members to form a faction.

The elections to the Majlisi Namoyandagon held on March this year, resulted in a victory for the ruling PDPT, which secured 49 out of 63 seats in the Majlisi Namoyandagon—two more than in the previous convocation.

Among the participating parties, PDPT received 51.9% of the votes, the APT gained 21% (7 seats), the PERT secured 12.7% (5 seats), the Democratic Party (DPT) received 5.1% (1 seat), and the Socialist Party (SPT) garnered 5.3% (1 seat).

The Communist Party of Tajikistan, for the first time, failed to win any seats in parliament.

Notably, the Social-Democratic Party, the only Tajik party to explicitly oppose President Emomali Rahmon, did not participate in the elections.  While it had taken part in previous elections, it never secured any mandates.
