Tajikistan has eliminated the requirement for Iranian citizens to register their passports with local authorities for stays of up to 30 days upon entry. This change, announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, is part of a broader visa-free travel agreement between the two countries for holders of ordinary passports.
The Tajik MFA information department reports that based on parity principle by the Decision of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan dated May 29, 2025, No. 324, the third paragraph was added to the Section 24 of the Government Decision of the Republic of Tajikistan "On the Rules of Entry, Stay, Exit, and Transit through the Territory of the Republic of Tajikistan by Foreign Citizens and Stateless Persons" (No. 207, dated March 31, 2020) as the following: "The Islamic Republic of Iran – for a period of 30 days."
In accordance with this amendment, citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran are exempt from the mandatory registration of their passports with the relevant authorities of the Republic of Tajikistan for a period of up to 30 days from the date of their entry into the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan.
“This change, made on a parity basis, reflects Tajikistan’s desire to improve conditions for nationals of neighboring countries that contributes to strengthening international relations and simplifying interactions,” a statement says.
The strengthening relationship between the two nations was highlighted in January 2025 when Iran and Tajikistan signed 23 new agreements covering trade, energy, infrastructure, cultural exchange, and security during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's visit to Dushanbe.
During those meetings, Pezeshkian met with his Tajik counterpart, Emomali Rahmon, to discuss various aspects of their bilateral relations.
The leaders stressed their countries' historical, cultural, and linguistic ties and expressed mutual desire to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors. This visa-free travel agreement is expected to significantly boost tourism, business, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
After the visit of Masoud Pezeshkian to Tajikistan and the signing of 23 new cooperation agreements in various fields, the bilateral relations between the two countries and visits by high-ranking officials have significantly increased.
On February 2, Iran and Tajikistan reportedly implemented a visa-waiver agreement, marking a significant step in bilateral relations between the two countries. The arrangement allows holders of ordinary passports to travel by air between the nations without visas for stays up to 30 days within any 90-day period.
The agreement, stemming from a memorandum signed during former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's visit to Dushanbe in November 2023, received approval from Tajikistan's government on January 3 and subsequent confirmation from Iran's Cabinet of Ministers, according to Iran's embassy in Dushanbe.
On April 22-23, 2025, Eskandar Momeni, the Iranian Minister of Internal Affairs, was on an official visit to Tajikistan. During his meeting with Emomali Rahmon, the President of Tajikistan, the issue of abolishing visa requirements for land travel between the two countries was discussed.
Iranian media quoted Eskandar Momeni as saying, “It was decided that the next step would be to abolish visas for land travel and create comfortable travel conditions for citizens of both countries.”
This was the second high-ranking Iranian official visit to Tajikistan in April. On April 15-17, Ali Najafi Khushroudi, the First Deputy Vice=President of Iran, heading an official delegation, visited Tajikistan and met with a number of high-ranking Tajik state officials, including the prime minister.
Additionally, Emomali Sobirzoda, the Minister of Defense of Tajikistan, visited Iran on April 14-16. During his visit, he met with several senior Iranian officials.
To-date, 160 companies with participation of Iranian capital have operated in Tajikistan.
