Dushanbe International Airport (DIA) has begun the construction of a new terminal, DIA director Zainullo Sharifzoda told reporters in Dushanbe on July 23.

Specialists from Turkiye have been invited to develop the project documentation.  According to Sharifzoda, the new terminal is expected to be operational within one to two years.

In addition, Sharifzoda shared that special zones for seeing off and meeting passengers are already under construction at the airport.  These areas are expected to be completed soon, and once finished, they will be available for use.

“These zones will provide comfort both in cold and hot weather,” the airport top manager added.

It is important to note that, since May of this year, access to the terminal at Dushanbe Airport for those seeing off or meeting passengers has been prohibited. This restriction is in place to comply with international aviation security standards, maintain order, meet sanitary requirements, and prevent the spread of infections.

A new terminal was opened at Dushanbe International Airport 11 years ago, on September 3, 2014.  The ceremony took place on Tajikistan's Civil Aviation Day, with the country's president in attendance.  Representatives from the French Embassy and Vinci S.A., the company responsible for building the terminal, also participated in the event.

The agreement to build the terminal was signed between the governments of Tajikistan and France in April 2009.
