Payrav Chorshanbiyev

Kazakhstan’s lower chamber of parliament has ratified the Kazakhstan-Tajikistan agreement on strategic partnership, Kazakh media outlets reported on September 21.

This document was signed in Dushanbe on September 15 last year during Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s official visit to Tajikistan.

Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament (Majlisi Namoyandagon) ratified the document in early December last year.

The agreement provides for further development of a high-level dialogue between the two countries, coordination of positions on the issues related to bilateral relations and topical international problems, and coordination of efforts to address the threats of international terrorism and extremism.

In accordance with this agreement, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan confirm their obligations to refrain from the threat or use of force directed against each other and not to conclude treaties with third countries that would affect sovereignty or security of the country.

The agreement also provides for expansion of bilateral political, economic, military, trade, cultural and humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.

According to data from the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, Kazakhstan is Tajikistan’s third largest trading partner following Russia and China.  Over the first eight of this of this year, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Kazakhstan has been valued at 405 million U.S. dollars.
