More than 100 residents of Tajik-language villages in the Tashkent region have sent an open letter to the presidents of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan drawing their attention to the problem of shortage of teachers in local Tajik-language schools.

The letter has been published in one of recent issues of Uzbekistan’s Tajik-language newspaper Ovozi Tojik (Voice of Tajik).

The letter authors – residents of the Bustonlik district in the Tashkent region – say if the problem of training of teachers for the Tajik-language schools is not solved in the near future, the Tajik-language schools of the district cane be left without skilled personnel.

Tajik journalist, Professor Ibrohim Usmonov, says the problem of shortage of teachers for the Uzbek-language schools in Tajikistan and the Tajik-language schools in Uzbekistan has arisen after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

“The Tajik and Uzbek authorities have failed to solve this problem completely,” Usmonov said.

Meanwhile, a source in the Tajik government says the authorities of the two countries are expected to study the issue of allocation student quotas ahead of an official visit of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Tajikistan scheduled for spring this year.

They will work out a government-to-government agreement on student exchange, the source said.
