POWERCHINA, a China’s state-owned hydropower project contractor, is expected to build three schools in Khatlon province, according to the Ministry of Education and Science (MoES).
An official source at a MoES says a school to accommodate 640 pupils will be built in Danghara district and another two schools to accommodate 320 pupils each will be built in the cities of Bokhtar and Sarband, respectively.
According to the source, POWERCHINA has been participating in modernization of the Sarband hydroelectric power plant (HPP) under financial support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Some 3,000 Tajik students are currently studying at 112 higher educational institutions in the People’s Republic of China.
Rehabilitation of the Sarband HPP (formerly Golovnaya HPP) commenced on November 18, 2016.
The construction of the Sarband HPP started in 1956, and the first unit was commissioned in 1962. Its installed generation capacity is 240 megawatts (MW), which makes it the fourth largest hydropower plant in the country.
It is expected that after rehabilitation the generation capacity of the Sarband HPP will increase to 252 MW.
The ADB in December 2013 approved a $136 million grant for the project aiming at refurbishing electric and mechanical equipment for power generation and transmission at the Sarband HPP.
Established in the 1950, POWERCHINA now comprises 65% of the market share in China’s large- and medium-scale hydropower project construction.
